Background of the Study
Traditional religious rites are integral to the cultural heritage of many communities and can serve as significant attractions for tourism. In Badagry Local Government Area, Lagos State, such rites not only preserve cultural identity but also stimulate local economies by drawing visitors interested in experiencing indigenous spiritual practices. These events, often characterized by elaborate ceremonies and rituals, provide a unique insight into the community’s historical and cultural evolution (Akinola, 2023). Tourism linked to traditional rites has the potential to boost economic development and foster intercultural dialogue, yet it also raises concerns regarding commercialization and the preservation of authentic cultural expressions (Adetokunbo, 2024). As tourism expands, there is a growing need to evaluate how these traditional practices are marketed and maintained, ensuring that cultural integrity is not compromised while maximizing economic benefits (Balogun, 2025). This study examines the dual role of traditional religious rites as cultural assets and economic drivers, exploring their impact on local tourism development, community identity, and sustainable cultural preservation.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the tourism potential of traditional religious rites in Badagry, challenges arise from the commercialization and possible dilution of cultural authenticity. The balance between promoting tourism and preserving the integrity of indigenous practices remains precarious. Unregulated tourism may lead to exploitation or misrepresentation of cultural rites, reducing their traditional significance. This study aims to identify these challenges and propose strategies for sustainable tourism development that respects and preserves the authentic cultural heritage of Badagry (Akinola, 2023; Adetokunbo, 2024).
